SWEDESD invited by UNESCO to discuss the future of Education for Sustainable Development

UNESCO have invited SWEDESD as one of five key partners to a consultation meeting with the member states to discuss the next step for education for sustainable development. The meeting takes place on the 9-10 of July 2018 in Bangkok, Thailand.

The five year long programme for education for sustainable development, the UNESCO Global Action Programme (GAP) on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), ends in 2019.

As part of the ongoing consultation process about the future of education for sustainable development beyond GAP, UNESCO have drafted a position paper and now invites parties to a technical consultation in order to discuss the proposal with state representatives from the UNESCO member countries. About 350 delegates, mainly state or ministry representatives, from UNESCO member countries are expected to attend/participate. SWEDESD is one of five invited key partners and will be attending the meeting as an expert resource.

The proposal lifts education for the sustainable development goals and Agenda 2030 as central and is likely to have a timeline for the years 2020-2030. The member states’ comments will be integrated in the draft UNESCO position paper, which will then be submitted to the UNESCO Executive Board, the General Conference and the UN for their respective approval processes in 2019. The technical consultation meeting in Bangkok thereby provides an important possibility for the member states to comment on the future of ESD and its focus.

The meeting is a continuation of a GAP Key Partner meeting in San Jose, Costa Rica in April 2018.
